- Los Alamos-Sarov sister-city relationship started more than 10 years ago.
- Collaboration between scientists had begun even earlier.
- More than 30 exchanges between specialists were accomplished during these years. There have exchanges between doctors and medical nurses, teachers and schoolchildren, emergency response personnel, artists and representatives of city administration.
- About 100 people (not counting schoolchildren) have visited Los Alamos. An official committee “Los Alamos Sarov Sister Cities Initiative (LASSCI)” was created to organize the exchanges. Many committee members have visited Sarov.

1994: - Creation of Sister Cities relationship between Los Alamos and Sarov - Visit by 15 students and teachers to Los Alamos from Sarov 1995: - Visit by 7 citizens from Los Alamos to Sarov – May 1995 to celebrate with the people of Sarov the 50TH anniversary of victory in WWII in Europe - Visit of about 14 city officials from Sarov to Los Alamos in October 1996: - Visit from Sarov to Los Alamos by a group of artists and businessmen. 1997-1998: - Two visits of physicians from Los Alamos to Sarov. - Visits from Sarov physicians to Los Alamos - Visit by two nurses from Los Alamos to Sarov - American International Health Alliance Partnership – on topics of Hypertension, Diabetes, and Asthma control, Preventive Dentistry, and Adolescent Risk Behavior reduction. There were about 15 visits between the two cities total. 2000: - Visit by students to Los Alamos, Espanola, and Gallup. - Visit by Los Alamos students and teachers to Sarov 2001-2004: - Sponsorship by Open World program of five visits by people from Sarov on topics of Youth activities, ecology, municipal organization and women-leaders. 2005: - Visit by Sarov City Head A.Orlov and 3 representatives from city administration to Los Alamos in September 10-18.
During the visit there were meetings with: - Ms. Fran Berting, chairman of the Los Alamos County Council; - Mr. Max Baker, Los Alamos County Administrator and other leaders of administration departments; - Police Department and Fire Department leaders and staff; - NM State Senator Mrs. Jeannette Wallace; - Los Alamos Sarov Sister Cities Initiative Members ; - Los Alamos school teachers and students; - LANL representatives and other meetings. The results of the visit: - Mutual agreement between Los Alamos county and the city of Sarov on sister city relationship and resolve to participate in mutually beneficial programs; - Memorandum of understanding between sister cities Sarov (Russia) and Los Alamos ( USA); - The development of Sarov Coordination Committee and LASSCI Work Plan for 2005-2006. According to achieved agreements between Sarov City Head and LANL representatives it is possible to bring a number of social projects in the frames of Nuclear Cities Initiative to life. Besides, there have been many visits between the scientific laboratories in Sarov and Los Alamos of scientists and technicians concerning collaborative efforts in scientific projects. As part of this many of these people have also participated in community efforts like carrying medical and infant supplies to the Sarov hospital, carrying pen pal letters back and forth for school children, and other community contacts, permitted by the respective laboratories, as well as communicated with representatives of Sarov. |
